The survey, which targeted 506 likely voters, showed that the majority of polltakers
believed the gas tax to be 72 cents. The gas tax is currently 18 cents, and only 12.5 percent of those polled answered correctly.
According to CNU’s reports, participants were given a multiple choice assessment of options such as 45 cents, 28 cents, etc.
The assessment comes with unique timing, as the state is looking for new money for transportation. The gas tax hasn’t increased in 22 years, but Virginia has 119
bridges that need repair, two residing in Loudoun County.
The results also stated that 58.4 percent of the group polled support Republic candidate Robert. F. McDonnell’s plan to sell state-owned liquor stroes in order to pay for transportation improvements.
A total of 68.7 percent of those polled are opposed to raising the gas tax.

How would motorists know what the tax is when it is not broken out at the pump? They probably don't know about the 18 cent federal tax or the 2% local tax in northern Virginia.
The gas tax is the fairest way to pay for roads - as long as it is used exclusively for that purpose - but there is too much opposition to get it raised to where it needs to be, which would be about 72 cents.
