The two checkpoints, which opened to travelers on Sept. 15, are located on a new 121,000 square foot underground mezzanine in the airport’s main terminal. They replace the checkpoints that used to be on the airport's ticketing level.

The new mezzanine is part of Dulles’ D2 capital construction program, which will soon include the opening of a new train system connecting the main terminal with the A, B and C gates at the mid-field terminal.

Passengers may enter the new mezzanine from the ticketing level, baggage claim level and the Dulles Diamond section set aside for certain travelers, said airport spokesman Rob Yingling.

To get to the area, travelers should follow the “To All Gates” signs, Yingling said.

“This frees up a lot of public space in the main terminal,” he added about the change.

This month, the airport will also unveil an expanded international arrivals building. Meanwhile, its highly anticipated AeroTrain system is expected to open to travelers later this year, he said.

When the train system does open, Yingling said the airport will keep its unique-looking shuttles for international travelers, passengers accessing D gates and for times when the airport needs to move passengers to and from planes parked away from a gate.

“They will give the airport flexibility,” he said.
