Beginning Monday, June 22, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close Sycolin Road to through traffic between Gulick Road and Turner Farm Lane.
The closure, less than a mile long, will help crews make substantial progress on a $2.5 million project to pave and widen the two-lane gravel road between Shreve Mill Road and Goose Creek. Much of the work will be complete when the road is re-opened on September 4, in time for the start of the Loudoun County 2009-10 school year.
While the closure is in place, motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes, including the Dulles Greenway, Route 7 and Cochran Mill Road. Impacted residents and landowners will be provided access to their properties throughout the closure’s duration.
Construction on the 1.3-mile section of Sycolin Road began in April, and includes paving, improving drainage, straightening curves, widening the road to two twelve-foot lanes and adding four-foot shoulders on each side. The entire project is scheduled to be complete in December 2009.
Sycolin Road currently carries less than 3,000 vehicles per day, but is projected to carry up to 10,000 vehicles per day by 2020.

Please help make the public aware of the detours that can be used. Many drivers are unaware that Gulick Mill Road is a DEAD END. (Countless cars are attempting to use Gulick Mill as a short cut through to Ashburn and are forced to drive into and/or turn around in the local homowner's private driveways.)
To get to the Ashburn area from Sycolin Road, users have two options.
Option 1. Take Shreve Mill Road to the Dulles Greenway East, towards Washington
Option 2. Take Cochran Mill Road to Route 7
Perhaps detour signs could be posted by VDOT/Leesburg at or before Cochran Mill and Shreve Mill Rds to deter motorists from making this time consuming (for the drivers and the construction crews) mistake.
