Funded by Loudoun County through a 2006 bond referendum, the $23.3 million “Route 7-607 Interchange” project on Route 7 at the Loudoun County Parkway went out for bids in December 2008, with the winning bidder, Shirley Contracting Company LLC, starting the work in January 2009. Once completed, one of Loudoun County’s “Top 10 Most Dangerous Intersections” will be eliminated.

Currently, the most obvious part of the project seen by drivers passing through the area are the mounds of dirt and large steel-and-concrete bridge piers going up along Route 7. But there is much more to Loudoun County’s 7-607 project.

Classified as a grade-separated Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI), the project includes 2,400 feet of new alignment for Loudoun County Parkway, provisions for numerous infrastructure changes and extensive grading, in addition to the Route 7 overpass.

The plans also provide for new and modified traffic signals; maintenance of traffic, erosion and sediment control; stormwater management and lighting. Utility relocations at the work site are extensive, and include replacement of 2,200 feet of 24-inch gas transmission line; replacement and upgrading of 2,800 feet of 30-inch water line; a 48-inch waterline open cut across Route 7; and 6,000 feet of communication duct bank.

The 7/607 project is the first interchange advertised under the county bond program, and is being managed by the Loudoun County Office of Capital Construction, Kent Marrs, project manager.

Dewberry is provided design, construction engineering, and inspection work. Once completed in August 2010, the interchange will be inspected and accepted into the state highway system by the VDOT.

Important future dates for the project include:

*August 2009–Divert Route 607 traffic onto temporary pavement

*February 2010–Shift traffic onto bridge, open western ramps to traffic, detour remaining traffic movements (Stage 2 Detour)

*May 2010 - Open eastern ramps to traffic

*August 2010 - Complete construction of 7-607 Interchange

The Loudoun County Office of Capital Construction will hold a public

information session about the project on Tuesday, June 23, 2009. The

meeting is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Research 1 Building

on the George Washington University campus, 20101 Academic Way in

Ashburn. Staff will be on hand to answer questions about the project. For more information and updates, visit www.loudouncountytransportation.com

They are coming along very nicely with this project. At least from a common guy's perspective, when i drive through every day, it looks like there is tangible and visible progress. Thanks for the update!
