Ruling Favors Appeal of Suspension to the School Board

Following controversial suspensions regarding alcohol possession and consumption on school trip to France, parents are fighting back.

Eileen Murdock’s daughter, now a senior at Dominion High School, was suspended last April, along with several other classmates, for supposedly possessing or consuming alcohol during a school trip to France over spring break. While administrators say that the students were suspended for 10 days, which constitutes a short-term suspension, parents argue that because their children were prohibited from participating in some activities abroad, the actual suspensions were longer.

Following a closed meeting for the specific purpose of evaluating Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS), Superintendent Ed Hatrick, the nine-member elected Loudoun School Board signaled their approval of Hatrick’s performance, and their desire to extend his contract for another four years. Hatrick has served as superintendent of LCPS for 18 years; his current contract expires in July, 2010. Terms of Hatrick’s four-year renewal contract for July 2010-July 2014 remain to be negotiated.  

No Injuries in Leesburg Bus Accident

 A Loudoun County Public School Bus became stuck on the median between lanes of traffic on Route 15 on Thursday, June 11. The driver, Mark David Griffiths, 54, was driving south on Sycolin Road and attempting to turn right onto the westbound lanes of the Leesburg Bypass/ Route 15. Unsuccessfully navigating the turn, the bus pushed forward onto the median between lanes of traffic, becoming stuck on the slope that makes up the median at that location.
