The filing of capital murder charges by Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney Jim Plowman in connection with the brutal attack on a Lansdowne couple in March 2009 has raised awareness about the “ultimate punishment” meted out by the criminal justice system, as well as the rarity it has actually been imposed.

Like most of Loudoun County into the early 20th century, old Waxpool was a farming community, with a combination post office and general store, a blacksmith’s shop, and a one-room schoolhouse.

 

While “Sugarland” may sound like a charming name dreamed up by a modern marketing guru, the origin of eastern Loudoun’s Sugarland Run community actually goes back to a unique natural resource in the area, and the earliest days of English exploration in the region.

One of the participants in the focus group was an 82-year-old African-American lady who pointed out that public transportation, which she needed to get to her medical appointments since she didn’t drive, was not available. When asked where she lived, she replied, “In my home, in Watson.” And when asked for how long? “Over 50 years,” she replied.
