Firefighters fought the blaze at the Leesburg Station Auto Wash on Leesburg’s Catoctin Circle for several hours. “They did a great job and [helped us] save our second building,” said co-owner Ryan Magazzine.

The house caught fire in Aug. 2005. Four years later, repairs are now underway, but the home is still not habitable. Some may have disagreed with the Board of Supervisor’s June 2009 decision to allocate $85,000 to have the home demolished as part of the blight abatement plan, but if the shell of a burnt-out house remaining after four years cannot be considered blight, then what can?

Originally, the pair submitted a request to Loudoun County to build at least 100 single-family homes on their 147-acre property. To their dismay, the county denied their request on March 26, 1968 because of inadequate access from Route 7.

Instead, Smith and Moran decided to use their property as a landfill, but did not inform the county that they intended to use the land for refuse.

Four years is too long. That was the message from the Board of Supervisors in their decision to allocate $85,000 to remove the charred remains of a house at 45 Acorn Court in Sterling. The owner of the house, Carlyle Alford III, had pleaded for more time to complete repairs at the a public hearing in May, where neighbors urged the Board of Supervisors to take action to remove the remnants of the structure--citing public safety and growing concerns regarding the effect on the overall value and liveability of other homes in the area.

Black smoke filled the air in Leesburg as a two-alarm fire ravaged the After Care-Detailing Center of the Leesburg Station Auto Wash at 149 Catoctin Circle SE on Thursday evening, May 21. Explosions were heard as firemen battled the blaze from overhead using aerial apparatus, and from the ground. .
