Last Saturday delivered one of the most beautiful days of the summer. It was the perfect day for the Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department's first annual Poker Run event.

The row of glistening fermentation tanks, reaching 15 feet high, sit quiet like lonely sentinels, behemoth reminders of the former Ashburn company they once served, Old Dominion Brewing Co. But feel no pain for these steely contraptions, beer lovers, for suds will soon course through them once again. And for that, you need to thank Matt Hagerman and Favio Garcia.

I am watching my five kids dance enthusiastically around the living room while I research this column. They are listening to a track from Doug Segree's live album One Night Only. It's a melodic, laid back kind of rock. It reminds me a little of Dave Matthews, a little of Jimmy Buffett, and a lot of summertime. It is the perfect music for an outdoor summer concert.

Suspects damaged the driver’s side quarter panel of a vehicle at the 43100 block of Peacock Market Plaza in South Riding.

 

Ashburn Woman Drowns at Virginia Beach

An Ashburn woman drowned on Friday while swimming with her family at Virginia Beach for the 4th of July holiday. A rip current pulled Sujana Umesh, 33, and her family away from the shore just after 8 p.m., officials said.

Lifeguards and other beach-goers tried to pull them out of the water, but could not get to Umesh in time, said police spokesman Adam Bernstein.

Umesh was pronounced dead at the scene by the time crews located her body.
