James Madison University softball recruit Caroline Williams of Purcellville, who plays for Loudoun Valley High School, was recently named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Virginia.

Gatorade State Players of the Year are selected on the basis of outstanding athletic excellence accompanied by high standards of academic achievement and exemplary personal character demonstrated on and off the field. The selection process is administered by ESPN RISE Magazine which features an editorial staff of prep sports writers from across the country. All state winners are also eligible for the Gatorade National Player of the Year award in their prospective sports. That announcement is expected to be made later this week.

Williams is the first JMU softball recruit to win the Gatorade honors. She is a three-time all-district selection out of Loudoun Valley High School. Williams led the Vikings to a national district championship in 2007 and an AAA State quarterfinal in 2008.

Williams is one of eight incoming freshman for the Dukes, who look to defend their first-ever Colonial Athletic Association championships in 2010.
