Don your green, gold, and purple -- it’s Mardi Gras time! This year New Orleans will mark its 173rd celebration, and Claude Moore Community Center is planning to pull out all the stops with its 6th Mardi Gras Carnival on Friday, Feb. 19, from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Enjoy games, crafts, food, entertainment, a raffle, a silent auction, and more. Mobile gaming services will be featured, courtesy of C3 Cyber Club, so you can play Wii and Xbox games all night long. Pizza will be offered by Delia’s, and sandwiches will be sold by Subway (food and beverages are cash only). Magic shows by John Huggins will begin at 6, 6:30, 7:30, and 8 p.m. and are included in the price of admission.

Raffle tickets will be offered for $1 each for a wide array of items, ranging from a $25 gift card at Five Below to a Fun Day Certificate at the Dulles Golf Center and Sports Park. An exciting silent auction will feature a tubing trip with River Riders, a skiing or snowboarding package at Whitetail Resort, tickets to the Ringling Bothers Barnum and Bailey Circus, a wine tasting for 10 at Willowcroft Farm Vineyard, dinner at Tuscarora Mill, a laser tag party for 10 at Panther Family Fun Center, and so much more.

Admission to the Mardi Gras Carnival is $1 for adults and $5 for children ages 2 and up and includes one set of beads, one mask to decorate and unlimited turns on all games and crafts (one turn only on the lollypop tree). Come on out for a Mardi Gras event the whole family will enjoy.

The following day you can enjoy the glamour and glitz of the Symphony of Design, a winter guard competition for the Mid-Atlantic Region. This year Potomac Falls High School will proudly host the event on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 12-10 p.m. This annual extravaganza features the unique combination of pageantry, dance, colorful flag display and skillful movement of equipment that is winter guard.

Over 50 guard units from across the Mid-Atlantic region will compete. Each unit, comprised of 38 students, performs a four-minute program that includes flags, props, dance and choreographed movement set to prerecorded music. While colorful flags are the visual star of the performance, rifles, sabers and other props are twirled and tossed in the air as well. Scenery and painted dance floors are often used to enhance the visual effect.

Tickets for Symphony of Design will be sold at the door at the cost of $10 for adults and $7 for seniors and children 12 and under.

Note: Due to inclement weather, the Alerting Loudoun to Lyme Forum has been rescheduled to Friday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. at Potomac Falls High School. Information booths will open at 6 p.m.
