Indicted by a federal grand jury for a number of drug and weapons-related charges, William "Martin" Thomas, of Middleburg, was taken into custody on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, during a joint arrest operation conducted by the Sheriff's Office's Criminal Investigations Division, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and Middleburg Police Department.

Thomas was stopped and arrested without incident on the Loudoun/Fauquier County line after his vehicle was observed at a Middleburg gas station. He was sought by law enforcement after being indicted by a jury for the Eastern District of Virginia on two counts of Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Crime, Possession with Intent to Distribute Cocaine, Maintaining a Drug Involved Premises, and Possession of a Firearm with an Obliterated Serial Number.

Thomas' illegal activities were discovered during the investigation of a series of commercial burglaries in downtown Middleburg for which Thomas' nephew, Anthony Roberts, and a juvenile co-defendant are charged. Roberts is also being held on the burglary and larceny of numerous firearms from Loudoun Guns in Leesburg in April, and was charged in connection with the murder of Lansdowne resident William Bennett and the attack on Bennett’s wife, Cynthia, on March 22, 2009.

The LCSO would not comment on the possibility that Thomas might be involved in any of the offenses for which Roberts has been charged.

Because of the wide geographic area covered during the Roberts crime spree, a coordinated investigation by the Sheriff's Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Leesburg Police and Middleburg Police was established to investigate the Middleburg burglaries, Thomas' drug activities, and the Loudoun Guns burglary.

Thomas was transported to the Alexandria City Adult Detention Center early Thursday morning, and later transferred to the custody of the United States Marshals Service.
