The National Weather Service in Sterling has issued a flood warning for the region, including Loudoun County--where traffic is being diverted from several major intersections. The flood warning is in effect through Wednesday morning.
At 7:22 a.m., the National Weather Service indicated that their Doppler Radar reported heavy rainfall throughout the Washington Metropolitan area. Moving slowly to the north at a speed of 5 mph, some areas are reported to have received 3 inches of rainfall within a few hours. The Flash Flood Warning represents the danger that additional rainfall of 1-2 inches is possible. Runoff from high rainfall causes flooding in small creeks, streams, highways and underpasses.
The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office has warned that traffic is being diverted from the following intersections because of high water:
- Evergreen Mills Rd./ Arcola Rd. (Sterling)
- Old Ox Rd./ Arcola Rd. (Sterling)
- Thomas Ave./ Lakeland Dr. (Sterling)
- Edwards Ferry Rd./ River Creek Pkwy. (Leesburg)
Additionally, traffic is being diverted from Second St. and Janney St. in Waterford due to a downed tree.
Do not attempt to cross swiftly flowing waters by foot or by automobile or water of an unknown depth. Vehicles can become stalled in high water or become stuck in debris.
UPDATE: At 10:50 a.m., the National Weather Service reported that the Flash Flood Warning remains in effect for THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA,CITY OF ALEXANDRIA,CITY OF FAIRFAX,CITY OF FALLS CHURCH, FAIRFAX, LOUDOUN, ARLINGTON, PRINCE GEORGES, MONTGOMERY AND HOWARD COUNTIES.
The Warning is still expected to end at 11:30 a.m. as rain has diminished in the area. However, water continues to cover several roads. It is expected to slowly recede over the course of the day.
Initially expected to expire at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the Flood Warning is now in effect through the morning of Wednesday, May 27. A moist airmass is expected to provide heavy rain across the western suburbs.
