Drakeford
Drew Alexander Drakeford used a fake badge and a holstered sidearm to gain entrance to the Sterling Price Costco located off Cascades Blvd.

Drakeford was seen shoplifting three DVDs, but did manage to pay for a piece of pizza at the food court before leaving the store. Drakeford was not approached because a pistol was observed holstered to his side.

On January 20, he once again entered Costco with a fake law enforcement badge and a handgun on his hip. Drakeford was once again observed shoplifting DVD’s.

On January 21, an individual was observed handling two Xbox 360 gaming systems. At this point, Drakeford once again entered the Costco and stated to employees that he’s “a State cop and is here to protect the people and the building.” Drakeford then told an employee at the Membership desk that he was a “Federal Agent and he’s concerned about the vehicles parked in the fire lane” and that he would wait outside until the vehicles were removed. Drakeford then left Costco with the individual carrying an Xbox 360.

Employees were unable to approach to get a vehicle description, fearing the firearm.

After reviewing surveillance tapes, the Loudoun Sheriff’s Office met with Costco personnel. On January 27, Drakeford entered Costco as Deputies responded. As Drakeford shoplifted more DVD’s, he was apprehended as he left the store.

During an interview with Drakeford, authorities learned he was a prior employee of the Milwaukee Frozen Custard store in Ashburn, where a 2008 burglary was being investigated. As police interrogated Drakeford, he admitted to the Burglary and stealing almost $1,500 in cash as well as computer equipment.

Culinary Badge
Culinary Badge allegedly used by suspect.
A close inspection of the badge worn by Drakeford revealed a title of “Chief Inspector—Culinary.” When police searched Drakeford’s home, much of the stolen merchandise and a pellet gun used during the thefts were found.

Drakeford has entered guilty pleas to Impersonating a Law Enforcement Officer and to two counts of Petit Larceny, all misdemeanors. He also entered pleas of guilt to Breaking and Entering and Grand Larceny, both of which are felonies.

“These types of situations are extremely dangerous to citizens and employees of local businesses who are trusting of someone wearing a badge and a gun,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Jim Plowman. “If there is ever any doubt as to an individual’s credentials, the Sheriff’s office or local police agency should be contacted immediately.”

Drakeford’s priors include convictions of misdemeanor Embezzlement and Assault in 2006. A final sentencing hearing will be held in Loudoun County Circuit Court on June 23, 2009 at 9:00 a.m.
