Program to Get Residents ‘Fit’

The Loudoun County Extension Office is challenging residents to get in shape.

Through a brand new program called Fit Extension, the office wants to put participants through an eight-week program geared toward improving exercise habits.

How it would work is that teams of six will be formed, with members encouraging each other to engage in at least 30 minutes of exercise five or more days per week. If each member of a team does the recommended amount of physical activity, the team would walk the equivalent of 480 miles, or the length of Virginia.

To take part, a registration fee of $20 per team is due by March 19. See www.fitextension.ext.vt.edu to sign up, or call 703-777-0373 for more information.

Supervisors OK Church Project

The Board of Supervisors approved a zoning request March 2 to build a church in the Belfort Park section of Sterling. Slated for nearly 3 acres along Cedar Green Road, the church will be home to the Iglesia Galilea de las Asambleas de Dios of Sterling. The property is across the street from a townhouse community and next to the WatYarnna Rangsee Buddhist Monastery.

Comments Sought on New Bus Service

Loudoun commuters still have time to comment on a plan to launch an express bus service between Loudoun and the jobs center of Tysons Corner.

According to transportation officials, the service will begin this summer. It will provide seven morning departures and seven afternoon and evening returns between park-and-ride lots in Leesburg and Broadlands South and various employment sites in Tysons.

Buses will travel non-stop on the Dulles Greenway and the Dulles Airport Access Highway to minimize travel time for Tysons commuters.

Passenger fares will be $3 per ride when paid with a SmarTrip card and $3.50 per ride when paying with cash.

To finalize the service’s schedule and routes, the county is seeking input from residents. Two meetings have already been held, but residents can still take part in the process online. A survey is available at www.loudoun.gov/transportation under Loudoun County Commuter Bus Service. Residents have through March 10 to complete the survey.

Museum Closer to Finding Storage Site

The Loudoun Museum is in the process of securing space to store its artifacts while its Leesburg facility undergoes extensive renovations.

The museum is negotiating with Loudoun officials to rent county-owned space at 108 Edwards Ferry Road in Leesburg for at least one year. Both the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors and the museum’s board of directors still need to sign off on the deal, which is for $150 a month for approximately 950 square feet of storage space.

Museum officials hope to secure the space by April, when they would like to move items.

A public hearing on the matter is scheduled for March 16 at the Government Center in Leesburg.

The museum is currently closed, as mold was found in the facility during renovations.

Appeal Assessments Online

Residents wishing to apply to appeal their real estate assessments through the Board of Equalization are asked to do so online between March 8 and June 1. Commercial property owners are required to appeal their assessments online. To learn more, see www.loudoun.gov/boe
