In response, the National Weather Service office in Sterling Wednesday issued a winter storm watch starting Friday morning for the entire Washington, D.C., region.
Forecasters are predicting snow will fall much of Friday and into Saturday evening. Accumulations above 12 inches are expected, with some parts likely to see close to two feet of snow.
The National Weather Service said the intensity of the approaching storm will likely be similar to that of the storm that struck the region on Dec. 19.
