In August, former Sugarland Run planning commissioner Michael Keeney stepped down from the job over conflicts with his work schedule. During his time on the commission, Keeney missed some meetings due to travel related to his job.

On Sept. 1, Supervisor Susan Klimek Buckley (D-Sugarland Run) announced that Glen Bayless, a retired Fairfax County teacher who lives in Sugarland Run, will replace Keeney and serve through the end of 2011. Because of his retired status, Buckley stated that Bayless will have more time to dedicate to the planning commission.

Bayless taught in Fairfax from 1977 to 2007. He also served as vice president of the Fairfax County Federation of Teachers. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history from Ripon College in Wisconsin and completed teacher certification and graduate school work in health and physical education at the University of Maryland and George Mason University. Bayless was appointed to the Loudoun County Transportation Safety Commission in 2008.

During the confirmation of Bayless by the Board of Supervisors, Supervisor Eugene Delgaudio (R-Sterling) said that being a Loudoun planning commissioner or supervisor is “a full-time job.”

“You have meetings, phone calls, e-mails and text messages … Some of the planning commission meetings go until 1 a.m.,” he said. “My hat is off to anyone who takes a job as a planning commissioner.”

This summer, some planning commissioners were criticized in the media for missing too many meetings.

The board unanimously approved Buckley’s request to appoint Bayless to the commission.
