Upon arrival at approximately 9 a.m., Fire-Rescue personnel requested a second alarm due to the heavy smoke and fire on the first and second floor of the home. The fire appears to have started in the basement.
Virginia Power was notified to shut-off power to the area, and the situation was deemed stable by 9:36 a.m. Using what is termed an "aggressive indoor attack," firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and prevent damage to the neighboring homes. Fire-rescue personnel were on site for three hours completing salvage and overhaul.
Several members of the family were home at the time of the fire, but they were able to evacuate safely. The family of five has been displaced by the fire, but arrangements for temporary housing are being managed through the American Red Cross.
One firefighter suffered a minor laceration to his hand, but remained on the scene. There were no civillian injuries.
The townhouse is considered a total loss although an official damage report has not been made. The incident is under investigation by the Loudoun County Fire Marshal's Office.
