Two Herndon men were injured in a plane crash near the Manassas Regional Airport on Friday evening, June 26. According to the Virginia State Police, Trooper Chris Thompson was called to the crash scene approximately a half-mile from the airport at 5 p.m.

A 1991 Glasair 3 fixed-wing aircraft piloted by Robert S. Vachon, 24, had taken off at 4:47 p.m. Vachon reported that he began to experience problems with the plane, and as he attempted to return to the airport, he began to lose altitude and crashed into a nearby wooded area.

Vachon and his passenger, Ronald Mangas, also 24, were flown by Virginia State Police Med-Flight helicopter to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation at this time. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been contacted and will also be investigating the crash. Additional details will be forthcoming from the Virginia State Police.

Minor Incident at Leesburg Executive Airport

On Sunday, June 28 at about at approximately 11:30 a.m., a private plane ran off the runway at the Leesburg Executive Airport as the pilot abandoned his attempt to take off. There were no injuries or property damage resulting from the incident.

Airport staff assisted in removing the private plane from the runway and moving it to a safe area. Emergency personnel responded in accordance to normal procedures, but assistance was not needed, as there were no injuries or damage. As a result of the incident, the runway was closed for approximately one hour before being re-opened for service.
