Area Teens Reflect on a Global Crisis

Briar Woods High School in Ashburn wanted to draw attention to the genocide in Darfur by collecting pairs of shoes to represent those killed in the crisis. Shoes were positioned around the Reflecting Pool on the Mall in Washington D.C..The shoe drive, led and organized by tenth grade teacher Logan Williams, drew supporters from all over the country, including Riddick Bowe and Miss Africa. The Darfur conflict has been described by the United Nations as one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with estimates of over 400,000 killed and over 2.7 million people uprooted. A joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping force was deployed in 2008, and in March 2009, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Sudan’s president for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur. Relief agencies have had a difficult time delivering aid due to the level of violence.

I was there helping out and enjoyed talking to the Loudoun Independent crew about the newspaper's efforts to have an online presence. This event deserved more news coverage: the Post has featured much less remarkable things on their front page, and they ended up hardly mentioning it anywhere! I got worried, though, after a couple of weeks checking your site that it wouldn't make it afterall. So, I am glad that I found it. Thanks!
