Carolyn Perry was recently named one of twenty-three teachers selected by the Virginia Association of Teachers of English as the recipient of the High School Teacher of Excellence Award, sponsored by the Secondary Section of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Perry is an English teacher at Loudoun Valley High School in Purcellville.
Perry will receive the award at the NCTE convention in November in Philadelphia. Author Joyce Carol Oates is the featured speaker at the convention.
“Do. Can. Must. These simplest of verbs are at the core of Carrie's excellence,” wrote fellow English teacher Allyson C. White in a letter nominating Perry for the Excellence Award. “She does so that students can do, pursuing professional development well beyond expectations and always in an effort to better meet the needs of her students. They can and must meet her expectations, but not without her presence and passion, her warmth and humor, her assistance, her exhortation, her trust.”
Perry, a secondary English teacher, has also served as department chair at Valley and as Loudoun County Public Schools English supervisor before returning to Loudoun Valley and the classroom.
Perry, a published author, has written and contributed to various publications related to education and communication. Perry was the 1990 Teacher of the Year at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Florida, is a past winner of the Disney Innovative Practices Award and is a past president of the Virginia Association of Teachers of English. Perry holds a bachelor's degree in English education from Florida State University and a master's degree in communication studies from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, according to the LCPS announcement.
