The two state finalists will be honored at the Virginia Association of Science Teachers (VAST) conference in November, although the award winner will not announced until spring 2010. PAEMST award winners also serve as models and leaders of mathematics and science education.
According to the LCPS announcement PAEMST is the highest recognition a kindergarten through 12th-grade mathematics or science teacher may receive in the United States. The program, enacted by Congress in 1983, authorizes the president to bestow up to 108 awards each year. The National Science Foundation administers PAEMST on behalf of The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
