New School Principals, Administrator Appointed to Serve LCPS

In recent weeks, the Loudoun County School Board approved several administrative appointments–all recommendations from Superintendent Ed Hatrick–including seven new school principals and a new Assistant Superintendent for Personnel Services. Six of the new principals currently serve as assistant principals at other schools in the Loudoun system, and the seventh moves from being the principal of a middle school to a high school. The new appointments are effective July 1, 2009. 

School board members approved principals for Loudoun’s two new high schools – Woodgrove in Purcellville and Tuscarora in Leesburg. Both high schools are scheduled to open for the 2010-11 school year.

Frederic Gauriloff, principal of Mercer Middle School, was named principal of Woodgrove High School. Gauriloff holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Gannon University and a master’s degree in administration from George Washington University. Previously, Gauriloff served as a life and physical science teacher at Our Lady of Peace School and as a teacher of general life and physical science at Roosevelt Middle School, both in Erie, Pa.; as a teacher of earth and space science and biology at Strong Vincent High School, also in Erie.

He also served as a teacher of biology, life science, earth and space science at Indian River High and Junior high schools, and a teacher of eighth grade physical science at Indian River Middle School, and as assistant principal of Western Branch High School, all in Chesapeake, Va., before joining LCPS as assistant principal of Stone Bridge High School. He was later appointed principal of Mercer Middle School. Pamela K. Paul-Jacobs, an assistant principal at Broad Run High School, was named principal of Tuscarora High School in Leesburg.

Paul-Jacobs holds a bachelor’s degree in special education from Winston-Salem State University, and a master’s degree in school administration from Shenandoah University. Paul-Jacobs served as a seventh and eighth grade teacher at Lunenburg Middle School in Victoria, Va.; as a special education teacher at Loudoun County High School; and as a special education teacher at Williams High School in Burlington, N.C. She has served as LCPS attendance coordinator; as a dean and teacher at J. Lupton Simpson Middle School; as assistant principal at Park View High School; and then an assistant principal at Broad Run High School. Brenda G. Jochems, assistant principal at Lowes Island Elementary, was named principal of Frances Hazel Reid Elementary. Jochems holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of North Carolina/Charlotte; a master’s degree in counseling and personnel services from the University of Maryland/Asian Division, Yokota, Japan; and an endorsement in administration and supervision from the University of Virginia.

Jochems served as fourth and fifth grade teacher at Nation’s Ford Elementary in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Schools; as a fourth grade teacher at Morton Elementary in Onslow County Public Schools; as a reading teacher at Sterley Heights Elementary, a Department of Defense school in Okinawa, Japan; and as a fifth grade teacher at Amelia Earhart Intermediate, a Department of Defense school in Okinawa, Japan. She has served as a math specialist at Hollin Meadows Science and Math Focus School in Fairfax County Public Schools; a second grade teacher at Benjamin Stoddert Elementary in the District of Columbia Schools; a third grade teacher and guidance counselor at Guilford Elementary; as a summer school principal at Sterling and Round Hill elementary schools; and then as assistant principal at Lowes Island Elementary. Robert L. Marple, assistant principal at Evergreen Mill Elementary, was named principal of Hamilton Elementary. Marple holds a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from Shepherd College, and a master’s degree in education administration from Shenandoah University. Marple served as a physical education instructor at Blue Ridge Middle School, and Leesburg, Hamilton and Cool Spring elementary schools; as a dean at Farmwell Station Middle School; as an assistant principal at Lowes Island Elementary; as an assistant principal at Park View High School; and then as assistant principal at Evergreen Mill Elementary. Karen D. Roche, assistant principal at Seldens Landing Elementary, was named principal of Aldie Elementary. Roche holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Lynchburg College, a master’s degree in education from Marymount University and an education specialist degree in administration and supervision from the University of Virginia. Roche served as a fourth and fifth grade teacher at Waterford Elementary; as a seventh and eighth grade social studies and English teacher at Sterling Middle School; as a seventh grade language arts team leader and eighth grade dean at Eagle Ridge Middle School; as a summer school principal at Mill Run Elementary; and then as assistant principal at Seldens Landing Elementary. Tracy L. Stevens, assistant principal at Catoctin Elementary, was named principal of Seldens Landing Elementary. Stevens holds a bachelor’s degree secondary education, history, geography and political science from Georgian Court College; a master’s degree in new professional studies in education from George Mason University; and an Ed.S. in education and policy studies from George Washington University.

Stevens served as a teacher of the emotionally disturbed for students in the third through fifth grades at Booker Elementary School in Hampton, Va. Stevens later served in Alexandria City Public Schools as a kindergarten, first grade and third through fifth grade teacher at the Cora Kelly Magnet School for Math, Science and Technology; as a first grade teacher at George Mason Elementary; as a summer school principal; and as a performance evaluation program specialist and as an assistant principal at Jefferson-Houston School for Arts and Academics. Stevens was later appointed assistant principal at Catoctin Elementary.   John Duellman, an assistant principal at Potomac Falls High School, was named principal of Mercer Middle School. Duellman holds a bachelor’s degree in English education from Ohio State University, and a master’s degree in education administration from Azusa Pacific University. Duellman served as an English teacher at La Contenta Junior High School and Yucca Valley High School in Yucca Valley, Calif.; as an English teacher at Broad Run and Potomac Falls high schools; and then as an assistant principal at Potomac Falls High School.

New Assistant Superintendent

Dr. Mary Hardebeck, LCPS Director of High School Education, was named Assistant Superintendent for Personnel Services. Dr. Hardebeck fills the post left vacant by Matthew Britt, who announced his retirement earlier this year.

Hardebeck holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Marshall University, a master’s degree in reading education from Syracuse University, and a master’s degree in education administration and a doctorate in education administration from Virginia Tech.

She has served an English and social studies teacher at Glenvar High School for Roanoke County Public Schools; as a reading specialist at Immaculate Conception School, as a reading specialist at Roosevelt Junior High School, and as an English, reading and gifted teacher at Corcoran Senior High School in Syracuse, N.Y. Also as an assistant principal and reading specialist at Woodbridge Senior High School in Prince William County Public Schools; as principal of Chapel Hill High School in Chapel Hill, N.C.; and then as the LCPS Director of High School Education.
