The annual award is given to recognize efforts by citizens, students, community groups and businesses to improve Leesburg’s environment.
“The Tolbert Environmental Achievement award is a fitting way to link environmental stewardship of Leesburg’s past through Mr. Tolbert’s work to [Leesburg’s] environmental stewards of today,” said James "Irish" Grandfield, Senior Environmental Planner for the Town of Leesburg. “This award is Leesburg’s way of recognizing a few of the many town residents who contribute to preserving and improving Leesburg’s natural resources.”
The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 19. Nominations should be written, no more than one page, describing a person, group or business and why their environmental activities warrant the award. Submissions must be specific about the nominees’ efforts and achievements. Examples of environmental activities that have led to recognition include: participating in recycling and use of recycled materials, pollution prevention, waste reduction, environmental education and so on.
“Winning the award really became an opportunity to further heighten everyone’s awareness about environmental issues and community service,” said Randy Hollister, headmaster of Loudoun Country Day School, who won the award in 2004.
“What led up to the award was an environmental project that we got the kids involved with, essentially it was an educational experience,” Hollister said. “The [Tolbert] award allowed us broaden our programs. It’s always nice to have efforts acknowledged, now were just more inspired to continue our environmental awareness.”
To submit a nomination, e-mail Grandfield at igrandfield@leesburgva.gov or hand deliver to the Leesburg Town Hall at 25 West Market St., by 5 p.m. on March 19. Awards will be announced in April.
