Alabama-based Cobb Theatres has signed a lease to open a 12-screen theater at the Village at Leesburg, which is home to a new Wegmans and is on the east end of town.

Earlier this month, the Loudoun Independent first reported that site plans had been filed with the Town of Leesburg that showed a 60,000-square-foot movie theater was in the works at the large mixed-use development. Plans put the theater on the western end of the development and directly across from a future bowling alley now going in. At the time, the only piece of information missing was the name of theaters’ tenant.

“In Cobb Theatres, we have attracted a recognized leader in the entertainment industry that brings a track record of high quality entertainment experience to Village at Leesburg,” said John Fainter, vice president of development for the project, in a statement. “After receiving considerable interest from other theatre groups, we are confident that this operator best complements our existing tenant roster, particularly the restaurant mix.”

Headquartered in Birmingham, Ala., the chain operates 194 theaters across the southeast. Its only theaters in Virginia currently are in Hampton and Richmond. This Leesburg location would be the company’s first foray into the Washington, D.C., region.

In a statement, the company said the Leesburg theater will be outfitted with an upscale bar and grill called CineBistro, which is found in only three of its other locations. According to a press release found on the company’s Web site:

“A CineBistro consists of an intimate lounge and restaurant area in a boutique setting, surrounded by multiple theatres — each seating between 80-100 customers. After dining, the tables are rolled back and patrons enjoy a movie in what Cobb Theatres describes as a true ‘private Hollywood movie screening experience.’”

The theater will also have stadium seating with custom-designed rocking seats for unobstructed viewing and wall-to-wall curved high grain screens that the company says produce brighter colors and sharper images than other screens.

Town officials still need to approve rezoning request before the company can break ground. It hopes to open by summer 2011.
