Expect that to be the case when the New York-based supermarket chain opens its Leesburg store Sunday, Nov. 8, promptly at 7 a.m. In October, an estimated 1,500 people showed up for the grand opening of a Wegmans outside of Philadelphia.
Despite the anticipation, store manager Phil Quattrini said don’t expect a marching band or Air Force fly-over on day one, just the store’s traditional opening day cheer by the employees, followed by the unlocking of the doors.
“That’s a big enough opening for us,” he said.
Quattrini, who has been with Wegmans for more than two decades, came from the chain’s Sterling store to head up the Leesburg branch.
Aside what you find at any supermarket, the 140,000-square-foot store, which employs 530 people, will be equipped with a large market café with prepared foods, sushi bar, coffee shop, French-style bakery, tea shop, pizza and wing bar, soup station, cheese shop, Kosher deli and indoor and outdoor seating for 500.
According to Quattrini, unlike the Sterling store, the Leesburg location will have a 19-seat food counter serving meat and seafood dishes made to order. The bar will also offer a wide selection of beers for drinking while on premises.
In the lead up to the grand opening, Quattrini said workers had a few around-the-clock days preparing the store, but, he said five days out that the store is “in fairly good shape.” This will be Quattrini’s third Wegmans opening, and first as a store manager.
“It’s fun to see the first-time shoppers,” he said, describing what he is most looking forward to. “This is going to sound conceited, but they have this look of amazement on their faces.”
The store is at 101 Crosstrail Boulevard, and is part of the new Village at Leesburg development just off Route 7 on the east side of town. After Sunday, the store’s regular hours will be 6 a.m. to midnight. See leesburg.wegmans.com to learn more.
