Carolyn Perry was recently named one of twenty-three teachers selected by the Virginia Association of Teachers of English as the recipient of the High School Teacher of Excellence Award, sponsored by the Secondary Section of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Perry is an English teacher at Loudoun Valley High School in Purcellville.

 

Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) Class of 2009 on-time graduation rate was 93.6 percent, 10.4 percent higher than the statewide average of 83.2 percent. LCPS also exceeded the state rates in nine statistical categories and all LCPS high schools exceeded the state graduation rate. On-time graduation rate measures the percentage of students that were first-time ninth graders during the 2005-2006 school year who earned a diploma within four years, according to the state announcement released last week.

 

Broad Run-Freedom: The Freedom HS-Broad Run HS varsity football game scheduled for Friday, Oct. 16 at Freedom High School has been rescheduled to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19.

 

Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) is one of the fastest growing school systems, in one of the wealthiest counties in the United States. Student enrollment has grown from 28,787 students in 1999 to an official Sept.

 

Discussions, debates and disagreements have already begun as Loudoun County's elected officials begin to grapple with the yearly budget process and an even more dismal financial forecast. The discussions began at the Joint School Board/Board of Supervisors Committee meeting on Thursday, Oct. 8, one day after the Board of Supervisors Finance Committee adopted fiscal guidance recommendations, which sent shock waves through the Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) administration building.

 

The two state finalists will be honored at the Virginia Association of Science Teachers (VAST) conference in November, although the award winner will not announced until spring 2010. PAEMST award winners also serve as models and leaders of mathematics and science education.

 

This reporter and Brett Carlson, a Loudoun Independent videographer, were recently treated to a helicopter-eye view of the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority's 24-acre Corn Maize at Temple Hall Farm near Leesburg.

 

Eight hundred and sixty-one students from Harmony Intermediate School and Loudoun Valley High School were polled regarding school colors and mascot for Woodgrove High School, set to open for the start of the 2010-2011 school year in Purcellville. Students selected the “Wolverines” as the school mascot and school colors of navy blue, green and white for the new western Loudoun high school, according to the announcement last week from Woodgrove HS Principal Ric Gauriloff.

 

The Subcommittee on Capital Facility Needs of the Joint Loudoun School Board/ Board of Supervisors Committee has scheduled a public hearing for Wednesday, Oct. 7 from 6-8 p.m. in the Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) Administration building, 21000 Education Court in Ashburn.

Bridget Beichler assumed the post of principal of Eagle Ridge Middle School on Monday, Sept. 28, replacing Janice Koslowski, who was recently named principal of Potomac Falls High School. The School Board approved Beichler's appointment at the board’s Tuesday, Sept. 22 meeting.

 

While Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) policies and processes regarding attendance boundaries continue to be discussed and debated by members of the School Board's Ad Hoc Committee on Attendance Boundaries, a very interested public remains engaged and involved.

 

School Colors and Mascot Announced for Tuscarora High School

The “Husky” was selected as the school mascot, and royal blue, black and white are the school colors for Tuscarora High School in Leesburg. Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS 11th high school, Tuscarora is set to open September 2010.

Dr. Ed Hatrick, Superintendent of Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) presented a State of Education report to members of the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce on Sept. 8. He profiled the continued growth of student enrollment, the reduction in funding for schools’ operating budget, the decline in starting and average teacher salaries, and the drop in per pupil costs.
