O’Bryhim’s dealership was one of about 800 of Chrysler’s 3,200 dealerships that lost their franchises when the automaker filed for bankruptcy protection. He learned in May that his franchise would be terminated effective June 9, 2009, and his first challenge was liquidating his inventory of 130 new Chrysler cars and trucks by the deadline. “By June 10, we had moved all but ten, which were sold to dealers in the surrounding area,” he recalled.

Love House
Annie B. Lawson was Ruth Love’s neighbor and good friend, and would often call Ruth on the shared, single telephone line that served their neighborhood to discuss the day’s happenings. Watson Road reopened on Aug. 17 after being closed for two weeks, and travelers on U.S. 50 are now crossing new pavement as they travel the highway east of Gilbert's Corner. Located slightly north of the original highway (and away from Mount Zion Church), the new roundabout eliminates the need for a stop sign at the intersection of U.S. 50 and Watson Road.

Easterner

It was announced Wednesday on their Website that Loudoun Easterner, a Landmark Media Enterprises newspaper with an office in the Ashburn Shopping Plaza, has ceased publication, effective July 22, 2009. At the time of the announcement, management of the Easterner was listed as Publisher Jeryl Parade and Assistant Editor Mike Pettigano. Former veteran editor Martin Casey left the Easterner in April.

Electric Chair
The filing of capital murder charges by Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney Jim Plowman in connection with the brutal attack on a Lansdowne couple in March 2009 has raised awareness about the “ultimate punishment” meted out by the criminal justice system, as well as the rarity it has actually been imposed.

The section of the Loudoun County Government Web site dealing with “Cultural Resources” points out that Loudoun has a long history of heritage preservation, going back to the 1930s, when the county addressed the proliferation of billboards along the highways that “obscured scenic views.”
