With all the practice that Virginians get, we should be very good at politics. Every year is a campaign year here in the Commonwealth, with candidates for one office or another being voted into office every November. However, it should be noted that there are generally several other days to vote over the course of the year. In addition to the general election in the fall, there are also smaller township races, off-year elections when a position becomes vacant, and primaries to determine whom the party candidates will be in the fall.

For Democrats of a certain age, there is nothing closer to a quasi-religious experience than getting to hear Bill Clinton speak in person. That is at least partially why Terry McAuliffe, one of three Democrats vying for the gubernatorial nomination, brought out the big guns in the closing weeks of the primary campaign.

Sunoco Robbery- Video Still 051309
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office have released video stills of two men who robbed the Sunoco gas station in Sterling on May 6. The robbery took place at 11:48 at the Sunoco gas station located at the 20800 block of Hardwood Forest Drive.

A fire in Broadlands on Sunday morning has displaced a family of six. A 911 call came into Loudoun County Emergency Communications at around 9:30 a.m. on Mother's Day Sunday.

The line to get in to the 10th District Job Fair circled led from the entry to the exhibition floor (normally the School Board meeting room at the Loudoun County Public Schools Administration Building) and snaked twice through the lobby then out a side door and around the side of the building. Some job seekers told the Loudoun Independent that they have been in line for the job fair for over 90 minutes.

Sheriff’s deputies served a search warrant on a Sterling home and took into custody a man wanted for the 2007 Fairfax homicide.

Neighbors and friends were shocked when they learned of the death of Stacie Lynn Harper of Ashburn, allegedly at the hands of her live-in boyfriend, David Cavalieri. An apparent incident of domestic violence, Harper’s body was discovered on April 15 when emergency response personnel responded to a 911 call from Cavalieri after he attempted to harm himself. Harper’s body was discovered beneath a bed, wrapped in plastic. It is believed that her body had been there for at least two weeks.

I had dinner with a college friend not long ago. It is perhaps a sign of the pace of modern life that while we used to talk about books—now we talk about audiobooks.

Almost every elected official with a (D) after their name was present and there was strong representation from those seeking statewide elections. A far cry from its small and lonely origins 6 years ago, tickets were scarce and hard to come by for this year’s Loudoun County Democratic Committee Jefferson-Jackson Dinner. This is a significant shift from 6 years ago, when there were precious few democrats in elected office locally.

Loudoun Commonwealth’s Attorney Jim Plowman and Chief Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney James Fisher recently sat down with the Loudoun Independent regarding the Bennett case.

The questions came fast, but Loudoun’s top prosecutors share their thoughts on the investigation, gang activity in Loudoun County and how their office will decide whether or not to pursue the death penalty.

Wheatlands Protest- Sign
The course of school site selection never appears to be an easy one. Several local residents came out on April 29 to demonstrate their opposition to proposal that would build three new schools (1 high school, 1 middle, 1 elementary) on Route 287 between Lovettsville and Purcellville. The three schools would be constructed on the 170 acre plot.

Jeff Frederick will not seek to regain his position as chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia (RPV). He announced his decision in a letter to supporters yesterday afternoon. This is either good news or bad news depending on whom you support, but it does indicate that the RPV will emerge from the convention stronger than they went into it.
