When I was 13 years old, my dad got a bit frustrated at my lack-of-productivity after school and I was “recruited” to come by after school every day and answer phones at the Loudoun Easterner. I may in fact have seniority among the ex-employees from that publication. Dad had only purchased it a year or two earlier and I was slowly becoming accustomed to the idea of my dad writing a newspaper delivered to the homes of everyone in the area.

It’s been something of a difficult summer. I mentioned not long ago that our power went out for the night last month during a particularly bad storm, and I was forced to do without television, internet and electric lights for an evening. That was the night I almost burned the house down after falling asleep while reading by candlelight.

How did those pioneers do it? I now assume that they expected to burn a house down every couple of years.

It has been a year since Phillip Clyde Bernier was part of Team Bruno on the ABC reality show, “Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann,” but Bernier (pronounced Burn-Yeah) still has a smile on his face and a song in his heart.

 

Like many of you, I attended graduation ceremonies in June. For me, it was a college graduation for one of my close friends who had gone back to receive her college degree part-time.
