With seven volleyball courts, practice areas, retail space, parents lounge, homework rooms, meeting rooms and even concessions, it's a far cry from your backyard or a quickly set up net at the beach. Work is going on right now as the final touches are being put on the new Virginia Volleyball Center.

The sight of a quarterback throwing one into the end zone. The crispness of the air. The taste of pumpkin pie. The sound of leaves crunching under your feet. The smell of chlorine...

At a farmers' market this weekend, I saw about seven lined up to taste. But that's just a small drop in the bucket of the varieties of apples that once grew in America. In 1876, one agriculturalist estimated over 1100 varieties.

I had to do 25 hours of service for an organization of my choice. I ended up volunteering with a group that assisted rape victims, training to be man the phone lines, and logging over 50 hours of community service in one semester. Thus began a love of volunteering that I continue today.

I imagined them sitting on the sidelines making up chants like “Get that patch!,” or “Row that boat!” My only exposure to the group was the annual cookie sale and the joy of finding a last roll of thin mints hiding in the freezer.

Last week, like many parents in our community, I went to kindergarten orientation—I swear I only teared up maybe four or five times. One of the things I did there was join my school's PTA.

When I was a kid, I dreaded PTA meetings—because my mom wouldn't miss one...ever. Not one. Not once. And I would sit through the meetings watching the clock because for some reason she would never leave me home with my older brother. Later, I learned this was for my own protection.

At birth, the human brain has more of these than at any other time—and more than it will ever use.

The air was crisp, the leaves were crunchy, and the sounds of a high school band echoed through the trees. I turned to my friend and said, “This is what it means to be autumn.”

The most effective way to better any community is to get involved.

With the help of the Loudoun County Sherriff’s Office, the Sterling Park and Forest Ridge areas will once again have a Neighborhood Watch program. Just this week, 11 signs were put up around the area to warn those "up to no good" that the neighborhood is on the look out.

On Monday, July 7, an 18-year-old woman was able to fight off her attacker and escape from an attempted abduction in the parking area of Sterling Park Mall. Her attacker asked for directions and when the woman approached, the attacker grabbed her and attempted to pull her into the vehicle. What makes this assault even more frightening is that it wasn't late at night—it was 6 p.m., in full view of other shoppers.
