...unfortunately for residents of the Broad Run Farms subdivision, that is exactly what happened.

 

The Leesburg Police Department is initiating a new Community SpeedWatch program that gives residents the ability to report and even help track cars that violate the speed limit.

Bolen stated that “varying levels of methane gas in the soil in the backyards of adjoining homes in the Countryside Subdivision indicate that the gas is migrating laterally beyond the landfill boundaries, and creating a potential hazard to adjoining residences.”

The incident remains under investigation and charges in the case are pending, according to a press release issued by the Sheriff's Office.

 

Officials from the Loudoun County Health Department, the Office of Solid Waste Management, County Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Supervisor Andrea McGimsey met with residents of Broad Run Farms at the subdivision’s Civic Association meeting Wednesday night to talk about the progress of cleaning up the Hidden Lane Landfill and the residents’ water contamination.

Originally, the pair submitted a request to Loudoun County to build at least 100 single-family homes on their 147-acre property. To their dismay, the county denied their request on March 26, 1968 because of inadequate access from Route 7.

Instead, Smith and Moran decided to use their property as a landfill, but did not inform the county that they intended to use the land for refuse.

Bevel was convicted on charges of incest in April 2008. However, he was then diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer and died in December, only months into his 15-year sentence.

 

These problems are not hidden in the corner of someone’s decrepit farm, but rather in the Broad Run Farms development in Sterling. An old landfill that has been closed for decades continues to be a trouble the residents of this quiet community, polluting their water and endangering their health.
