“I just want to do my part,” said Diane Glover of Sterling. Glover used to volunteer to run blood drives years ago, and on Saturday, Aug. 15, she was an active participant at the Summer Block Party hosted Aug. 15 by Inova Blood Donor Services at their headquarters on Nokes Boulevard near the Dulles Town Center.

“The most important thing that I can tell you is to never hold your breath,” said Henry Johnson, president and course director of the Adventure Scuba Company. After snorting up a significant amount of water due to panicking and failing to breath, I understood this valid little piece of advice.

Holding your breath will simply make you panic from lack of oxygen, and you will fail to use the tank of oxygen at your disposal.

Safety:

The number one rule in cooking is to keep everything clean. Wash your hands thoroughly, as well as the food and tools used to cook it. Remember to wear closed-toed shoes– not just to protect your toes from sharp objects like knives falling on your foot, but also hot water that could be spilled.

“This is the closest you will ever come to flying,” said Sunny, co-owner of Highland Aerosports, located at Ridgely, Md., on the Eastern Shore. He was right. Of all of the extreme sports, hang gliding is the only one that allows you to soar through the air and rise higher on warm air currents.

The Amazing Race

On go-karts, the gas pedal is to the right and the brake is to the left. This is very important to remember when navigating the twists and turns of the course. While speed is vital to come out on top in go-kart racing, it is also important to remember when to use the brakes. The first time around the course is generally marked by a fair amount of skidding, as new drivers try to keep up with the more experienced racers.

William Spencer, 49, of Baltimore, allegedly led a crime spree through the town of Leesburg – pulling a gun at a jewelry store, stealing a vehicle and holding an elderly couple hostage in their home. The Loudoun Independent followed Spencer’s alleged footsteps of Friday’s events.

Police indicated on Saturday that William Spencer had a getaway driver planned for his robbery of the Other Kind of Jewelry Store. Spencer was arrested on Friday night after a lengthy standoff resulted in no casualties. Following the arrest of Spencer, additional evidence appeared that resulted in the issuing of a warrant and a new suspect being taken into custody.
